Kalbar’s desperate attempt to hide the threats to the vegetable industry were exposed during the EES process. Their ‘Horticulture Report’ was shown to be nothing more than an embarrassment – compounded by the fact that their ‘experts’ had not visited the area to talk to concerned growers and had no idea of what crops were planted when. Expert witness for MFG – Dr Robert Premier – made it very clear what was being put at risk. His presentation supported what opponents to the mine had been claiming. There is no way mineral sands mining can coincide with the type of vegetable farming that takes place on the Flats. It would appear that those who claim otherwise are either completely uninformed, deluded or so self-interested they couldn’t care less what happens to our most important industry. No amount of ‘spin’ will take the risks away.
