RUSSELL PEEL

Russell is a PhD in Chemical Engineering with expertise in water and wastewater treatment. Russell retired to East Gippsland after finishing his career as the global director for environment for a major Australian corporate. He also has experience working in a uranium mine.

The first part of Russell’s talk strongly condemns the EES and IAC process as inappropriate and totally unfair. He believes the government and regulatory authorities have abrogated their responsibilities to the community.

Russell’s experience makes it clear that you cannot rely on mining companies to act responsibly without strong regulations and punitive measures – neither of which occur in Victoria.

Around 10 minutes in, Russell talks about the impacts of water, dust and chemicals: the continued pollution of the Lakes, the total waste of water that is stealing from the future of Victorians, and the proposed dumping of thousands of tonnes of ‘synthetic organic chemical’ that ‘in many jurisdictions in the world … would be a criminal enterprise’.
